2012 in review: Looking back and thinking forward

2012 was good year for me, personally and photographically. Especially the 2nd half.

I bought the Nikon D2Xs in July and immediately hit the streets, getting some nice summer street images that I am very proud of.

In the Autumn, the colours had gone, so I returned to my photographic roots, shooting and home developing black and white films.  I enjoyed this a lot and got some great results.

Here is a couple of bag shots of my 2012 kit:

DBSPhotoblog did better than I ever imagined, and reached nearly 1600 hits in 6 months.

Thanks to everyone how follows the blog, friends new and old, and those who leave me wonderful and inspiring comments.

I also wrote an article on film processing that was features on the JapanCameraHunter blog, this was a great honor and generated a lot hits for my blog.  I will continue to send things to Bellamy and hope to feature on his site again in 2013.

I recently started sharing my work on the 500px photo sharing site, within minutes I received some lovely positive comments.  Check it out if you want to see my best street photography all in one place:

2013 will see a few changes to the blog:

I invested heavily in digital equipment and good glass with the intention of putting it to work.  I did do a few little jobs but mainly for friends/charities so didn’t make much money.  I also didn’t really enjoy it, it felt like work.  This in mind I have come to the decision to concentrate purely on street photography and blogging.

This will mean a change in equipment.  The D2Xs has been a faithful companion and a great all round performer.  Due to its weight and overall non discrete appearance I have decided to move it on and get something smaller and lighter, with a fast fixed lens, something more suited to street photography. (Probably a Fuji X100).

I also plan to go to more exhibitions and start reviewing  budget photobooks.  Not everyone can afford, or even get the chance to acquire expensive limited edition hardbacks.

I am also going to continue experimenting with film photography, both 35mm,  and instant, maybe some 120 too.

I am looking forward to this coming year, and I am very happy to continue sharing my photography adventures with you.

Dave.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

The new Boeing 787 Dreamliner can carry about 250 passengers. This blog was viewed about 1,600 times in 2012. If it were a Dreamliner, it would take about 6 trips to carry that many people.
